about
Hi, I’m Suhani— a 17 year old from Goa.
Growing up here, in close proximity to the sea, the world of water has always been a part of me. My family and I would be at the beach almost every other weekend, and I would be lost in the waves. I was lucky to have been introduced to diving at a young age. Despite being wary of it initially, I grew to long for moments spent underwater, filled with awe and curiosity.
Why am I doing this?
Writing has always been a large part of my life. As someone who’s (extremely) shy, I have the habit of keeping everything to myself. This blog, for one, is an attempt to put a part of me out for the world to see— thoughts and encounters that are shaping me into the person I am becoming.
It is also an attempt to show facets of something as magnanimous as the ocean to people who haven’t been able to access this specific side of it. The parts of it that impart wisdom and showcase the depths of biodiversity, along with the silly little interactions divers observe. To bring joy, and to spark curiosity to learn about the intricacies the sea is home to. This is in hope to draw attention to the desperate help and change in behaviour the ocean needs from us.
In a time like this, where there is so much death looming around us, I think it is important to be hopeful- especially when the sea itself shows us so much resilience.
Why this name?
Beneath the Waves has a few connotations to it. On one level, it is a documentation of the underwater world, which quite literally lies beneath the waves. But it also represents something more personal— the layers beneath my waves. Whether through photography or literature, this blog is a glimpse into two worlds: the one beneath the sea, and the one within me.
